BurntWood creates one-of-a-kind solid timber furniture designed for you, crafted to last, and destined to be loved every day.
Every commission is more than a functional object. It’s a story! Your furniture will be designed in close collaboration with you. From the curves and proportions to the grain of the timber, every detail is tailored to your space, your taste, and your lifestyle.
Here are some recent bespoke commissions and the story behind their design.
A client wanted indented handles for cavity doors positioned 90º to each other. When closed the doors created two new walls of a separate room. They wanted handles where the design flowed from one handle to the other when the doors were shut.
The house had a view of Lyttleton Harbour and the mud flats. I decided to try and replicate the horizontal lines but include some curves that reflect the hills in the distance. All the timbers in these handles are recycled and are Matai, Purpleheart, Kahikatea and Beech.
The customer liked one of my coffee tables designs but needed something different to sit on top of a beautiful ottoman that she did not want to replace but turn into a functional surface for entertaining. Design wise, it had to be fairly dark timber to compliment the rest of the room.
We chose Walnut as the main timber and warmer strips of timber, Rimu, French Oak and Paulownia at the centre.
This outdoors bench was built as a surprise 70th birthday present for an avid skier of 50 years! The skis were his original pair, and we tried to utilise them as much as possible in the design.
They are obvious in the back of the seat but also, the beer /coffee holders on the arm rests are taken from the ski bindings. The timber is reclaimed Oak.
Sometimes you get quite open requests from people that come through the doors. I was presented with a piece of West Coast Beech mounted on MDF with a crack forming at one end. The brief was simple, ‘make it look good.’ First the MDF and glue were removed and then the crack was opened all the way, for stronger visual effect, and the two pieces were ‘stitched’ together.
It is a joy to build custom units as that they come with a story. The timber in this project was reclaimed Rimu from a renovated school. It came with name stickers, hundreds of staples and a few very old, dried out bits of chewing gum.
The client was a retired principal of the school that had been renovated. I was asked to leave all the timber imperfections, from years of use, untouched. Visually it was certainly the right call.
Commissioning a bespoke BurntWood piece begins with a conversation.
